EO-MA TRACK or Earth Observation for Mine Activity Tracking and Sustainable Supply Chain Accountability was a Kick-start project funded by European Space Agency (ESA). GeoCodis acted as a lead partner while external service contractor was Space Compas, ltd. The main goal was to develop an EO-based service that provides independent, spatially explicit, corroborative evidence to support ESG verification and assurance workflows.
Objectives:
- Strengthening the ESG assurance by generating EO-derived evidence that provide objective, third party confirmation of asset-based ESG claims.
- Enhancing risk-based verification by delivering clear KPIs and trends that highlight material changes and inconsistencies.
- Improving defensibility and traceability by structuring outputs as traceable, assurance-ready evidence packs.
The service was designed for ESG verification and assurance bodies that require defensible, traceable, and repeatable evidence to assess asset-based ESG claims. It generates EO-derived indicators, structured as assurance-ready evidence artefacts, enabling risk-based plausibility checks without replacing professional judgement or ground-based verification.
Examples of EO-based indicators, providing additional evidence to existing ESG claims verification procedures: deforestation monitoring, land use change monitoring, monitoring water bodies, built-up area detection,…
The final output of the project was a user-ready service, prepared for the next steps. To support this, we conducted a desirability study, including research into potential customers’ pains and gains, and developed value propositions based on these insights. Secondly, a technical feasibility study was carried out, including the architecture design of the EO-MA TRACK solution, as well as the testing and validation of selected EO-based indicators. Lastly, an economic viability assessment was performed.
Following the successful conclusion of the Kick-start phase, the next steps focus on launching pilot partnerships with early adopters to generate case studies that demonstrate measurable impact and enhance credibility.
