City of Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is struggling with high percantage of unplanned areas. A considerable part of the city and its surroundings is built without basic infrastructure, urban planning guidelines, and most importantly, without building permits. The competent authorities for urban development saw a lack of a unified system for assessing the existing situation, so with the initiative of the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities (MoHUUC) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the UrbanGIS platform was a solution to have spatial data in one place. We made the UrbanGIS platform in collaboration with the GFA consulting company. The platform serves as a viewer of unplanned areas and indicators that will be crucial in the future for better neighborhood planning, improving existing infrastructure, and controlling informal constructions. The goal is for the platform to serve as a tool to help improve the living and working conditions of the residents.
