In cooperation with the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO), we updated the DroughtWatch application in early 2025. The application is designed to monitor drought conditions in Eastern Europe and uses an extensive set of agrometeorological data, including satellite imagery. To assess drought conditions in Slovenia, ARSO publishes the Sušomer once a week, providing a clear overview of drought intensity.
Due to the hot and dry weather in recent days, drought severity has been increasing in many areas. The attached animation, starting in mid-June 2025, shows the first drought wave of the year as well as the intensification of drought in the most recent period.
In addition to displaying past and current conditions, the application uses weather forecasts to provide an outlook of expected drought development for a little over a week ahead. The attached images show forecasts for the period from 15 to 21 August. In Slovenia, drought is not expected to be as severe as during the first wave this year, while in the Balkans the situation is projected to worsen further.
