Matjaž graduated as surveyor from Faculty of Civil Engineering at University of Ljubljana and later finished his master studies at the same school. He was one of the first Slovenians in civil engineering to realize the potential of the upcoming digital technologies. During his career he was working as project manager on several projects. He was also a GIS consultant for UN Human Settlements Programme in Iraq and advisor on the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
